How to Find an Orlando Wedding Venue

Planning your Central Florida wedding, but still haven’t nailed down the venue? No one needs to tell you this is one of the most important tasks any bride and groom face, given none of the other tasks can proceed until you check this box. Before you speak to the caterer, the florist or your Orlando wedding photographer, you need to know where your event will be held. But fear not! Here is a simple step-by-step strategy for finding the venue of your dreams.

Artistic Orlando Wedding Photographer

1. Choose Your Main Location

Indoor or outdoor? Ballroom or rustic cabin? Country or city? Before you can select a venue, you have to know a) what city or town you’re getting married in, and b) what type of venue you’re looking for. Discuss the options, considering whether you have an “in” anywhere – like a large estate in the family or a friend who works at a winery. Make a list of possible options that meet your criteria, but don’t decide on anything yet.

Orlando Bridesmaids

2. Choose a Date!

Can’t do much without a date, now can you? Talk to all the stakeholders, making sure those can’t-miss people are available, then ink it in. While you’ll only send your save-the-dates 6 months in advance, it’s best to book your venue 12 months ahead.

Orlando Wedding Ceremony

3. Draw Up Your Guest List

Before you can choose a venue, you need to know how many people will attend. Make sure you and your partner do more than consult one another; there may be family members you overlook. Your mother could pay for all eternity if you forget to include long-estranged Aunt Marge, so take inventory by talking important family members before making a final tally.

Orlando Wedding Venue

4. Set a Budget

You’ll need to look at the entire budget for your wedding and then dedicate the correct portion to your ceremony and reception locations. Include food, drinks, special clothing (dress and tux), and Orlando wedding photography. Also be sure to include often-overlooked items such as:

  • Save the date cards

  • Rehearsal dinner costs

  • Gifts for the wedding party

  • Tips for service professionals

  • Extra outhouses, if needed

5. Consider Your Needs

Do you have a favorite restaurant you want to cater the place? Do you want the venue to provide the drinks and the cake? Would you like a wedding planner and florist included? Or do you want to put all the pieces together yourself? It’s important to sort this out ahead of time, as venues usually fall into one category or another: all-inclusive, or venue-only, though some offer tiered packages.

6. Research Venues

Now it’s time to combine the above information. You know your location, your head count and your budget, so it’s time to find a venue that can meet all three criteria. Keep in mind that some venues charge by the head (especially if they’re serving your dinner) while others have a flat rental fee. If this isn’t listed on the site, you’ll need to call or email to find out.

Before you begin phoning around, however, it’s a good idea to draw up a list of every venue you might consider. That way, you can sit down at an opportune time and go through the entire list, which will save major brainpower. If none of your potential venues fit the bill, ask for a recommendation of one that will seat your guest list more affordably.

Guide To Hiring an Orlando Wedding Photographer

Wondering how to find the best Orlando wedding photographer? There are so many styles and options to choose from in the mid-Florida area – lifestyle, traditional, fine art and more – that you might feel a little lost, but this post should help you hone in your style and needs. Let’s get started!

Orlando Bride and Groom Photo

Research as Many Different Portfolios as You Can

When you start your search, you may not yet know what style you prefer. Therefore, the first step is to expose yourself to as many portfolios and photographers as possible. Naturally, if you fall in love with someone at the beginning, go for it! But until you find the right photographer, who specializes in the style you’re looking for, keep searching. It’s worth it.

Set a Budget Before You Reach Out to Orlando Photographers

According to Brides, wedding photographers can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000, but the average is usually between $3,000 and $5,000, typically higher in a metro area. A good package will include:

  • Travel of reasonable distances, usually a few hours

  • A full day of coverage (8-10 hours, say)

  • Candid shots and formal photos

  • Photo retouching

Depending on the photographer, they may also offer extras such as an engagement session. If it’s not part of the package, they’ll often add it on for a reduced rate if you book your wedding with them. That said, price is not the most important factor. You will have these photos for life, so base your decision on style and personality instead.

Create a List of Potential Photographers in the Orlando Area

After examining all your options, create a list of candidates. Now that you’ve seen the many styles on offer, you should also summarize what you love and are looking for: style, time of day, tone and color of photos, etc. This will make for a much more productive interview.

Once you’re armed and ready, read reviews to get a sense of the person, and then start calling! Begin with your favorites and work your way down. That way, you can stop as soon as you land on someone who fits. Ideally, you should talk to at least three photographers to get an idea of what to ask for from the one you go with.

Orlando Engagement Session

Ask Careful Questions and Take Your Time

There’s a lot to consider before you drop that much money, which will represent a significant portion of your wedding costs. For instance:

  • Who will assist them, and what does that entail?

  • When can you expect your photos back?

  • How will you pay, what’s the breakdown and at what times do you need to deliver payment?

Orlando Wedding Portrait

Sign the Contract

Everything good? Time to sign on the dotted line! Book your Orlando photographer well ahead of time, otherwise that slot will fill up. Especially in an area like Florida, when wedding season goes year-round, you don’t want to miss your opportunity and have to go with a second-rate replacement.

Six Orlando Restaurants That Would Make Cool Wedding Venues

If you’re researching Orlando wedding venues, then you already know the potential candidates fall into a few basic categories: ballrooms, parks and estates, private homes and, of course, restaurants. The last is a popular choice for the obvious reason that they combine ambience with good old-fashioned food in one simple location, so you don’t have to do anything but show up. Here are six you might want to try on for size.

1. East End Market

Looking to combine a down-home neighborhood feel with some of the best grub in Orlando? East End Market is the destination for you. With sweet shops, baking companies, restaurants and more, you’ll find no end of delicious food to entertain your guests. Think Domu, which pairs specialty cocktails with noodles made in-house for the perfect mix of ramen and good times.

The best thing about East End is it has a venue onsite, so you can choose your caterers and have food delivered from right around the corner … literally. This is also an amazingly photogenic destination, so your Orlando wedding photographer will have an easy time capturing those picture-perfect moments.

This restaurant and bar combine cool beach vibes with family-friendly fare such as sandwiches, burgers, fries and other pub-inspired dishes. With a main dining room attached to a bar, a lounge, a private area and a coffee shop, you’ll have no shortage of cozy nooks and excellent photo ops.

With naturally leavened dough for that crisp, chewy, perfectly prepared texture, and delicious whole ingredients on top, Pizza Bruno’s pies are always scrumptious. Whether you’re looking for a more affordable reception location, an after-party destination or a caterer, this is a safe bet.

Having made a name for itself back in 2015 when it first came on the scene, The Salty is a donut shop par excellence. Perfectly light and fluffy dough paired with a huge range of toppings, all beloved of dedicated customers, makes it an ideal addition to your wedding day. Also, the brand just opened a big, beautiful flagship store in Orlando, where you can enjoy indoor and outdoor seating for a crowd!

As the name suggests, Luke’s Kitchen and Bar knows their way around a kitchen … and a bar. Given you’re going to need both at your wedding, it’s already looking good. Add in the fact that they use local ingredients wherever possible, make everything in-house and take their inspiration from the full breadth of our expansive American homeland, they’re a great choice. Beautiful seating arrangements, plenty of space and an upscale-but-comfortable feel seal the deal.

This place bills itself as Orlando’s premier craft brewery, and we can see why. Not only are their ales and grogs delicious, they’ve got both taproom and kitchen on hand, so they can handle all your wedding needs. With covered outdoor seating, charming décor and an uber-friendly family-owned feel, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to (beer) heaven.

Presto: Food, Photos and Fun!

Once you’ve chosen a venue, make sure you familiarize your Central Florida wedding photographer with it ahead of time so they can do any necessary research and bring the right equipment. They’ll want to know whether the restaurant is indoors or outdoors (or both); how the restaurant’s staffing and protocols change depending on the time of year; and whether the eatery has grounds they can use for photo setups.

Also, it’s about time to book your Orlando wedding photographer to make sure they don’t get away! Get in touch to learn more.

10 Perfect Venues For Your Boston-area Micro Wedding

Recently, I came across an article about “Micro Weddings” which gave me hope for how weddings might evolve to meet the demands of our new normal. What is a Micro Wedding you ask? According to Brides.com “A micro wedding is an intimate affair, typically with no more than 50 guests. They still feature time-honored traditions that make a wedding but on a much smaller scale.”

When thinking about your little big day a smaller guest count will open you up to some amazing and unique venues for your micro wedding. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite venues in and around Boston that I think would be perfect for smaller guest counts.

1. Loyal Nine (Cambridge, MA)

Loyal Nine boasts a direct relationship with farmers and artisans and a focus on New England culinary traditions. Their space can accommodate groups of up to 130 for a seated dinner so they are well covered for any micro wedding. Their patio is perfect for an intimate outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour and with a location in the heart of Cambridge it is easily accessible to any out-of-town guests. I am glad I have gotten to photograph two weddings here, both were some of my favorites of all time!

2. Breaktime Bowl & Bar (Pawtucket, RI)

For those couples in search of a unique venue, look no further than Breaktime Bowl & Bar! The duckpin bowling alley was built in the 1920s and was later restored to its current retro state. With a no fuss burgers-and-fries centric menu and bowling for cocktail hour, guests will be feeling nostalgic while celebrating your big day. I have not photographed a wedding here, but it was a perfect space for this wedding’s cocktail hour + portraits.

3. Waterworks Museum (Boston, MA)

Located right off the Green Line in Cleveland Circle, the Waterworks Museum is a historic venue with tons of flexibility. You’ll find perfect portrait locations among the industrial backdrops of the museum's retired waterworks system or beautiful front entryway. Also, the picture-esue reservoir is just across the street for some great nature shots! And I have shot here three different times, each one was totally unique from the previous!

4. Warehouse XI (Somerville, MA)

The best thing about Warehouse XI, located in Somerville, is that it is a blank canvas. Their white walls leave space for any creative vision you may have for your micro wedding. There’s also two rooms so you can have good movement from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception. The two weddings I photographed here were both so amazing that we decided to use this space for a party of our own!

5. Overbrook House (Buzzard’s Bay, MA)

With its Cape Cod campsite vibe and multiple houses to choose from, there’s tons of flexibility with this venue. Tons of different spots to pick for different parts of the day. Plus you can even stay on-site with your guests! I’ve photographed three killer weddings here, and I liked it so much I recommended it to my friends for their wedding!

6. Pagu (Cambridge, MA)

If food is the priority for your micro wedding, Pagu is worth some serious consideration. Their large event dishes include a whole suckling pig roast or a massive chicken or seafood paella! Their beautiful space can accommodate many different configurations and they are easily accessible right in Central Square. I photographed a wedding here on one of the hottest days ever, and they still pulled off an amazing day!

7. Massapoag Yacht Club (Sharon, MA)

Looking to have a micro wedding on the water? The Massapoag Yacht Club may be the place for you. Their beachfront is the perfect place for an intimate ceremony and their indoor space just screams “lobster bake”! I was fortunate enough to photograph an amazing intimate wedding here a few years back!

8. Alden & Harlow (Cambridge, MA)

Alden and Harlow is located right in the middle of Harvard Square and serves thoughtfully sourced, honest American food in a subterranean, modern and comfortable space. Their dark and moody vibe is unlike any other venue in the area. And who wouldn’t want portraits in Harvard Square?

9. CK Pearl (Essex, MA)

CK Pearl, based in Essex, is a great seaside venue with classic New England food. They have several unique portrait locations nearby and have the perfect set-up for an intimate reception. The wedding I photographed here had some of the best food I’ve ever had!

10. The Sinclair (Cambridge, MA)

The Sinclair, centrally located in Harvard Square, is part restaurant, part music hall, part event venue. They have tons of space available to fit a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all in the same building. And who wouldn’t want to see their name up on that marquee? The Sinclair is truly one of the most unique micro wedding venues in Boston.
